Breaks Don’t Break Careers. Bias Does.

I took a break to care for family. Now, every role expects me to ‘start from scratch’ as if those years don’t count for anything.

You paused for valid reasons. But now that you’re ready to return, it feels like you’re being punished for it.

Every month, I meet professionals who’ve taken 1 to 5 years off. Some raised children. Some dealt with illness. Some relocated for family. Others just burned out and needed to breathe.

And yet, the job market often greets them with:

  • “You’ll need to start at an entry-level role.”
  • “We need someone with recent experience.”
  • Silence.

Here’s what I share with returnees:

  1. You’re not outdated. Tools change, but core professional thinking — ownership, decision-making, problem-solving — stays with you.
  2. Your story is your bridge. Don’t hide the break. Explain it honestly. Emphasize what you learned, how you stayed connected to your industry (freelancing, upskilling, even informal projects).
  3. Focus on outcomes. Shift attention from the gap to your ability to deliver. Share 2-3 examples of past wins and how you can replicate them now.
  4. Be selective. Find teams that value maturity, resilience, and adaptability. They’re out there — don’t settle for those who don’t get it.

Closing Thought: Returning is hard — not because you lack capability, but because others lack imagination. Keep going. You’re not restarting. You’re continuing with deeper insight.
