Every company says ‘just be yourself’ but when I do, I get passed over. Should I fake a persona to crack interviews?
You followed all the advice: clear answers, authentic stories, asking smart questions. Still didn’t make it.
We’re told to show up as our full selves in interviews. But when candidates express vulnerability, challenge assumptions, or show non-linear career paths — many are quietly rejected.
What’s happening:
- Culture fit becomes code for “similar to us.”
- Confidence is often judged by extroversion.
- Structured interviews turn into subjective interpretation.
What you can do instead:
- Know your audience. Research your panel. Understand the company’s hiring philosophy. Adapt, without acting.
- Narrate alignment. Talk about what excites you about the company’s mission or product. But also, be honest about where you see room to contribute.
- Prepare for ambiguity. Many interviews are loosely structured. Practice thinking aloud, breaking down your reasoning in business cases or problem scenarios.
- Close the loop. After each answer, ask: “Would you like me to expand on any part?” Invite clarity.
Final Word: Interviews aren’t performances. They’re conversations about shared potential. If you have to bend too much to fit, the seat probably isn’t yours.
